5 “Ssukaali...a bride’s price”
A lively and informative production that explores the life of a young Ugandan girl using traditional and contemporary dance concepts. The story highlights issues of child marriage, gender disparity, and gender based violence. "Ssukaali" is the luganda word for sugar. When a girl child is born in Uganda the child is often referred to as "ssukaali". This is a reference to the anticipated bride price she will bring to the family at time of marriage. Oftentimes it signifies her worth and determines her choices (or lack thereof).

9 Girl chat on leaving no girl behind; strategies to adequately reach vulnerable and hard to reach girls and women to prevent teenage pregnancy and child marriage.
Both poverty and lack of information on how to prevent pregnancy are predominant issues faced by girls in vulnerable settings and girls from marginalized groups. This makes them vulnerable to both teenage pregnancy and child marriage.
Studies have found that a girl is able to be protected from both vices if she is kept in school. Unfortunately, high school dropout is a profound problem in refugee settlements. This is due to various reasons like language barriers, poverty and unavailability of enough schools to amply cater for the large influx of refugees.
The session will present some key findings of the report on teenage pregnancy and child marriage in Kyaka II refugee settlement.
